Check out the 1896 Hannibal Wacky Medicine ad I found on Ebay

It’s no secret that Hannibal, Missouri has a rich history. Being Mark Twain’s childhood home is just one of the perks of living in an area so rich in history. Based on something I just found on Ebay, you can add some wacky drugs to this historic list.

A few things to note: 1. This is not my ad and I have nothing to sell. 2. I do not guarantee anything this seller says because Ebay is always an exercise in deciding if you can trust a seller / buyer etc. But, the list claims that it is an 1896 Hannibal Missouri Hunstock Headline Quack Medicine Ad this is original and not a reprint.

Since Ebay ads come and go all the time, here’s a screenshot as it appears now so you know I’m not making this up.

According to the listing, this was carefully cut from an 1896 magazine. Check it at actual size.

This led me to a fascinating article Mary Lou Montgomery wrote about the Hunstock family and their time in Hannibal. One thing Mary Lou mentioned in her story is that one of the Hunstock sons was lost in a cave in Hannibal around 1870 and this could have inspired the story of Tom Sawyer as written / said by Mark Twain eventually. If you like Hannibal’s story, seriously take the time to read Mary Lou Montgomery’s story. It’s a great read.

As for the Ebay listing, if the seller is legit, just $ 17.99 (plus shipping) could get you a neat Hannibal history. As for the headaches, I think I’ll stick to the aspirin.
