Kerati was born in Eritrea, East Africa. Kerati told the Washington Post that he left Eritrea at the age of 17 for the United States to compete in the 2014 World Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Originally from Oregon, Kerati lived in Virginia, graduated from high school, and then moved to Albuquerque to study at the University of New Mexico. During her tenure at UNM, Kerati broke many records and won many titles and awards. In 2020, she left college and raced professionally in the Dark Sky Distance team. On Wednesday, she became a naturalized citizen and qualified to compete for the spot on the U.S. team. Her personal best 10k time is 31: 10.08.
