CASSELBERRY, Florida – A 7-Eleven gas station clerk stole credit and debit card information from predominantly elderly customers, called their banks in an attempt to take control of their accounts, and made thousands of dollars in purchases fraudulent, according to the Casselberry Police Department.
In total, Nykeshia Smith is accused of having made $ 5,454.20 in purchases with the cards of three victims. Another victim was also identified but no money was stolen.
Police said the investigation began when a 74-year-old woman said $ 964.26 in purchases were made on her debit card at Silver Star Mart in Ocoee, Big Lots, Sam’s Club and Discount Perk .
Records show the victim stopped 7-11 days before the theft and forgot his debit card in the card reader after making a purchase.
When she went for her next run, she realized her mistake and therefore returned to the gas station, but an employee said the team had since changed and they did not have her card, according to the report.
Police said they examined surveillance footage showing Smith removing the card from the reader as the victim, who uses a walker and moves slowly, made his way to the exit. Smith did not attempt to arrest the victim or return the card, authorities said.
The second victim said Smith used his credit card to make purchases at Own It Now Sales, Sam’s Club, Apple.com and Lowe’s, totaling $ 1,840.35, according to records.
This victim said he was a regular 7-Eleven customer on US Southern Highway 17-92 and recalled handing his card to Smith on one occasion, according to the report.
Police say they used cell phone tapes to determine that Smith called the victim’s credit card company in an attempt to take over the account and the tapes show she also deepened her voice on that call to sound like to the victim, who is male.
Records show the next victim went to 7-Eleven on June 18 and Smith asked to see her Discover card, which she then took a photo of without the victim’s knowledge.
Smith then called the victim claiming to be from his phone company and asked for the last four digits of his Social Security number and date of birth, according to the report.
The victim said shortly after being made aware of the purchases she hadn’t made and when she called Discover they said Smith was on the other line in an attempt to take control of the account, according to authorities. Police say Smith failed and no money was stolen from the 65-year-old.
The fourth victim, however, was an 82-year-old woman who had $ 2,649.59 taken from her account during fraudulent purchases at A New Image Baby, which provides ultrasounds, Penn Credit PCC Trust, Comcast, Happy Face Entertainment and Winn-Dixie, records show.
Police said for many purchases they were able to locate security footage or testimonials proving it was Smith who was using the stolen card. They also brought in his probation officer who was able to identify his voice in tapes of calls made to credit card companies, according to the report.
She faces several counts of theft, fraud and robbery.
7-Eleven, Inc. sent News 6 a statement regarding the arrest.
“This individual was an employee of an independent franchisee. The franchisee has informed 7-Eleven that he has terminated the employee in question. 7-Eleven fully cooperates with law enforcement. Customers who believe they have been affected can call 1-800-255-0711, ”the statement read.
Police said Smith was on probation for a 2013 racketeering and identity theft case in Orange County at the time.
A judge granted him $ 100,000 bail for the Casselberry police case, but no bail for violating his probation.
Police said they are still investigating and there may be more casualties.
