Employees had the opportunity to make a positive impact through monetary and food donations, meal packaging and food distribution at local food banks and other food security initiatives.

“So many of our neighbors have and continue to struggle to put food on their tables. We were able to have a positive NRG week helping alleviate some of the hardships so many in our communities face, especially as a result of pandemic, “said Jennifer Brunelle, senior director, positiveNRG, NRG’s corporate sponsorship program. “We always aim to be active and positive members of our communities, by reconnecting in person for our annual positive NRG week, our employees took the opportunity to make a difference.”

Participating in more than 29 events during the week, employees volunteered with several organizations, including:

• United Way of the County of Grand Mercer

• Houston Food Bank

• Food Bank of Greater Pittsburgh

• Attack poverty

• Children’s meals, Inc.

• Camp Espoir

Many nonprofits and community groups have experienced an increased need for food assistance over the past two years. One of NRG’s partners, United Way of Greater Mercer County, noted that before the pandemic, 55,000 families in the region were food insecure and that need has continued to grow exponentially. The Houston Food Bank saw a similar increase and distributed an average of 688,000 pounds of food and other essentials per day, an increase of over 126%.

Courtney Matlock, Senior Director of Development, United Way of Greater Mercer County, spoke of the importance of working with partners such as NRG: “When it comes to food security, we are proud to be able to bring together partners who are genuinely involved in the community, we count [NRG] among our “crew,” said Courtney. “The director of the Mercer Street Friends food bank called to express his gratitude for being able to be a part of the effort – they are so grateful for the trucks that [NRG and their employees] helped make it possible. “

“We are very grateful for the NRG partnership,” said Amy Ragan, director of development for the Houston Food Bank. “NRG employees are very productive volunteers as they work quickly and strive to prepare as much product as possible for distribution. Their volunteer support means that many more families will have food in their homes within 24 hours. It’s humiliating to see a company like NRG making such an impact in their community. “

PositiveNRG will continue to contribute to causes critical to our communities and to recognize and support organizations that work every day to fight hunger.
