The Pittsburgh Opera announced the largest individual donation in the company’s 83-year history, $ 5 million donated by tech entrepreneur and real estate developer François Bitz.
Bitz’s gift is part of Pittsburgh Opera’s global $ 50 million campaign under the Forever name, with the goals of promoting the cornerstones of art, community and resilience of Pittsburgh Opera; make the Pittsburgh Opera a model of entrepreneurship and inclusion; and securing the Pittsburgh Opera’s place as a cultural treasure for future generations.
âA donation of this magnitude has transformational implications for the Pittsburgh Opera,â said CEO Christopher Hahn. âIn recognition and deep gratitude, we name our Headquarters Strip District Bitz Opera Factory. The new name nicely references the building’s past life as the Westinghouse Air Brake Factory while also recognizing its current role as a vibrant center of opera creation.
âI have always been inspired and intrigued by the power opera has to bring to bring together great stories and great music,â said Bitz, who is also a member of the Pittsburgh Opera Board of Directors. âI hope my donation will encourage others to follow my example to firmly support this world-class organization. The Pittsburgh Opera House adds immeasurably to our region’s celebrated quality of life and helps attract the many talented and creative workers the city needs to continue to grow and prosper, âadded Bitz.
