Steelers vs Raiders Picks: The Analysis

Opposites collide in Pittsburgh

At the heart of Sunday’s meeting between the former rivals is the Raiders ‘ability to move the ball against the Steelers’ ability to stop it. The Steelers’ defense proved its worth in the first week against a solid Buffalo Bills offense, and on the road nothing less.

The Raiders racked up yards Monday night against a decent Ravens defense, but that group from Baltimore is not in the Steelers class. When they needed it most, the Raiders racked up over 250 total attacking yards in the fourth quarter and in overtime.

The Raiders delivered all of that offense on Monday despite a slow start as quarterback Derek Carr struggled to find a flow with his receiving body. Roethlisberger showed once again in Week 1 that he can handle a game. A loved one is planned.

What the Steelers have going for them on Sunday, aside from playing their home opener, is that they can dictate the tempo on both sides of the ball. Their murderous defense and ball control attack keeps the clock moving and the score low.

Both teams showed in Week 1 that they can let go and score late when needed, but this one is likely to be close throughout, giving a more conservative approach in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders’ defense isn’t as acclaimed as the Steelers’ defense, and giving 189 yards rushing in Game 1 raises concerns, but it came up against the Ravens’ rushing offense and Lamar Jackson.

The Las Vegas defense was there at the end and is expected to improve this week, with the Steelers still trying to put all parts of a new offensive line together.

Less than 44.5 points in total (alternate totals)

Carr on the ground

On seven occasions last season, Carr was held within 270 passing yards, even though one of them was due to a Week 15 injury. Of those seven games under 270, five are. came on the road last season, including four in the team’s first five away games.

The passage through the air seems to be difficult for the Raiders against Watt and Co., especially with starting goaltender Denzelle Good lost for the season with a knee injury.

To his credit, Carr has thrown for at least 316 yards in each of his last five full games, dating back to last season, including Monday’s 435-yard performance.

But the Steelers defense should be able to show its worth on its home debut in 2021. Josh Allen attempted 51 passes against this group last week and produced … 270 yards.
