For Garret Myers, renovating his first home allowed him to put his project management skills to good use beyond his regular 9 to 5 job – and it also allowed him to spend some quality time with his father. , Gary.

Together, father and son tackled the renovation of 3719 Mt. Troy Road, a duplex in Reserve.

“It was a solid, well-built mid-century house, but the interior needed love in every corner,” Myers says.

The two-unit duplex, which Myers bought in 2019, is now on the market for $ 325,000 (MLS # 1532706, Molly Finley, Howard Hanna Real Estate, howardhanna.com). It is under agreement.

Set on generous grounds, the all-brick exterior of the duplex is easy to maintain. There is also a wide driveway with a garage for two cars.

“My property is almost ¾ of an acre with woods behind it, so it’s very private and secluded,” Myers explains. “It is literally a 10 minute drive to downtown Pittsburgh.”

Inside, each two bedroom, one bathroom unit is well appointed. Myers and his father removed the old rugs, painted all the walls and updated the lighting, adding long-lasting LED lights. They also improved the kitchens and bathrooms.

The ground floor unit has a spacious living area with a living / dining room combination. Natural light floods the area, thanks to a large window, while white paint and light floors increase the energy.

Renovating the kitchens, Myers recalls, turned out to be his favorite part of the project.

“I really enjoy cooking, so it was a lot of fun for me to choose modern finishes and colors. It really changed the whole house, ”he says. “I did all of the tiling work on the backsplashes myself. ”

The kitchen now features soft gray cabinetry, white backsplash, stainless steel appliances, and white quartz countertops. Myers also removed a wall, which visually enlarges the space.

In the upper duplex unit, the kitchen finishes are a bit more dramatic, with white cabinetry, black stone countertops, and richer gray paint.

Bedrooms in both units are bright and cheerful, with generous closets and a plush carpet underfoot that creates airy comfort.

The bathrooms in each unit have been completely remodeled, with new subway tiles, vanities, toilets, tubs and fixtures in brushed nickel.

The accommodations have a separate laundry room. Utilities – including gas, electricity, HVAC, and water – are also separate.

Outside there is a lot of yard to walk through. On the hill is a patio perfect for entertaining.

“I was surprised at how much I liked the outdoor space,” Myers says. “Before, I lived on the 26e floor of an apartment in the city center. Within a year, I built a garden and started planting.

While he says he looks forward to his next construction project, he remains grateful for the past experience.

“It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever done,” he says. “I had a lot of help with my mom, dad, friends, and lots of YouTube videos.”
