View extended hours as Carnegie Library branches open at full capacity

If you’re ready to make yourself comfortable with a book (in the air conditioning), Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Library is ready to welcome you inside again.

After a year of pandemic restrictions, this week the library’s 19 branches are back to full capacity with new hours.

In a press release, the library says it is revising its Covid health protocols, eliminating occupancy restrictions and mask warrants. Laptop loans are resuming and furniture and toys are returning to reading spaces.

Unvaccinated visitors are always encouraged to wear masks. And curbside and virtual services are still available for customers who want contactless service. In-person programming has not resumed and meeting rooms are unavailable.

If you’re looking for somewhere special, the library has compiled a list of five favorite areas “to read, play, learn and connect:”

  • Window seats facing Murray Avenue at the Squirrel Hill branch
  • The stacks of the Oakland main branch. (There are even windows overlooking the dinosaur room at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History)
  • Reading nook under the stairs of the Beechview branch
  • Teen Zone Studio HIVE in East Liberty
  • August Wilson Hall in the Hill District
