Water’s Edge Village School receives $250,000 donation for new school – The Coastland Times

Water’s Edge Village School in Corolla (WEVS) and the Outer Banks Community Foundation (OBCF) announced that Corolla residents Wayne and Betty Evans have pledged $250,000 to help WEVS (a K-8 charter school) build a school additional next to its current location in the historic village. The tuition-free school, founded in 2012 and guided by a mission to integrate holistic child development with an emphasis on hands-on, project-based learning, has grown from 15 to 43 students. The new building will accommodate current needs and future growth by providing three additional classrooms, a community room, a resource room and an office for teachers.

WEVS publicly launched its fundraising campaign at a celebration at the historic 1890s schoolhouse. The campaign goal is to raise $1.35 million. Betty Evans said: “It’s motivating and inspiring to do something good for a child. Years ago, we spent a lot of time at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. There was a plaque next to the elevator that said something like “It doesn’t matter the size of your home or the type of car you drive, what will matter is if you have made a difference in someone’s life. ‘a kid.” And I think this school can make a difference in the lives of many children, so let’s build this school!

With the momentum generated by Evans’ pledge from their OBCF Donor Advised Fund as well as a $10,000 grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation’s Community Enrichment Grant Program, the school hopes inspire community support for the project. Community engagement is especially necessary because, under state law, state and local governments cannot contribute capital to charter schools. Wayne Evans said, “That’s what we can do for the Corolla. A hundred years ago there were people doing the same thing. And I hope that in 100 years this building will still work for the community. The new classrooms will expand the school campus; the youngest will still have lessons in the old school.
